Chapter 11

Micah dropped onto the sofa two hours and a shower later, a mix of frenzied energy and collapse pressing him into the cool leather. Even though his hands were raw from repairing fence wires, and his muscles ached, he should have been more grateful. None of the alpacas had been injured beyond an intense cardiac workout from the ordeal, the newest crime had been photographed and recorded, and the temporary fencing that he and Deirdre had put in place would hold until he could figure out a more permanent solution.

They’d been incredibly lucky. Again. That was the problem. These attacks would never stop until somebody got hurt. Maybe Derek. Maybe him. Or, now, Deirdre.

The woman who’d scared the hell out of him earlier dropped her phone on the coffee table and collapsed on the other end of the sofa. Like him, just back from a shower and dressed in a T-shirt and cotton athletic shorts, Deirdre sat with her damp hair spread across the backrest and closed her eyes, lacing her fingers behind her head. He tried not to notice how amazing she smelled or how soft the skin on her bare legs looked in those athletic shorts or to think about how amazing she’d tasted and felt against his body earlier.

“What a crazy night,” she said without moving or opening her eyes.

He had to agree with that. Neither of them could have predicted this evening would include both a kiss in a goat barn that had them walking on eggshells around each other and chases of the suspect who’d targeted his family and loping creatures set free to fend for themselves.

Good thing they’d both put a whoa on that kiss that would have had him laying her back in the hay with the smallest encouragement. He knew what a bad idea it would be to get involved with the special agent, too. So why were his hands still prickling with a ridiculous need to touch her even now? Why was his body still aching to finish what they’d started? Maybe his moment of panic when he couldn’t find Deirdre anywhere, when he’d failed to protect her, too, had messed with his head more than he’d realized.

“Wait.” Her eyes opening, she immediately shot a look at the front door. “You checked all the locks, right?”

She pushed off the sofa and started that way herself.

“Hey, stop. We already checked them together.”

Finally, she stopped and turned back to him. “We did, didn’t we?”

“Twice.” Before she had a chance to mention them again, he added, “As for the shotguns, both are positioned near the doors and ready, ammunition responsibly stored nearby.”

“Sounds like everything’s fine.”

She returned to the sofa but crossed her arms as she sat. Clearly, she wasn’t fine—hadn’t been since they returned from the petting zoo.

“Are you cold? Want me to make some hot chocolate?”

She shook her head.

“How about a fire?”

She glanced at the fireplace, considering. “Sounds nice, but I don’t want to put you to any more trouble tonight.”

He shot
